PTA Fundraising - How does it all work?

Updated: Aug 7

Fundraising is a vital part of the Bloomingdale PTA allowing us to raise funds to pay overhead costs and develop programming for our students and schools. This committees’ events can help to bring the community together by creating a sense of unity between students, teachers, parents, and community members who work together in planning, while building new partnerships and reaching new members.

The Fundraising Chair and Co-Chair are chosen based on interest in yearly membership sign-ups (typically in July/August). Once selected by the board, the chairs work together to plan events by month for the entire school year. Once ideas are presented to the board and

approved, the chairs work out the details per event by selecting dates, locations of the events, and if necessary, they reach out to the corporation assisting the PTA with the event being planned. For each event, the chairs work closely with the PTA Treasurer to discuss budget planning for upfront expenses and planned income.

Though a typical fiscal school year is September-June, the fundraising committee chairs (if they choose to continue in their role) often work throughout the summer, planning events for the following school year. Many events have a lead time for planning, especially those where an outside corporation assists in the planning of the event (Holiday Shop, Color Run, Book Fair, etc.)

Samantha Swidrak (Chair ‘23- ‘25) has begun to plan out our upcoming school year with the

Board Members. Some of the events are new events/ fundraisers, while others that have been successful in the past are being repeated. Though repeated, many are being tweaked/

reinvented!

  • Color Run: family event. This will replace Walk-a-Thon. Early October.

  • Boo Bags: repeated from last year. Adult & Child bag options available. October.

  • Holiday Photoshoots: repeated from last year. Christmas and Winter options available this year. November.

  • Holiday Shops: being held for students during school hours this year. December.

  • Holiday Catalogue: will replace Gertrude Hawk but will still have some chocolate options! November/December.

  • Spring Events TBD. Still being planned

Fundraising plans events for every month, with the understanding that some members and their families may choose to participate in some, and not others. It is important to have a variety of fundraisers (some being catalogue driven and others being physical events), so that the committee can appeal to the masses of our members. Other than its’ membership, a PTA needs fundraising to function. Without you and your support of our fundraisers, the PTA would not be able to continue as a successful parent, student and teacher organization.
